New Boundaries, Same Old Division

I am appalled by the Redistricting Draft maps released on January 25th as much as the recent goings-on at City Hall.  If I could, I would run an Impeach Them All campaign, directed at everyone who chopped up my Council District.  They would be ousted with their greedy forks and knives.  Transparency?  Hah!  Bus ride through the Council Districts to fully understand what every resident and "communities of interest" spoke about at 15 Redistricting Hearings?  I think the city rented a bus and…

Saving to buy your first house...where do you start?

To all my first time home buyers---

The days of 100% financing have BEEN gone!  You must have at least 3% of the purchase price of a home as your down payment.

Next to correcting your credit, saving for a down payment is probably one of the hardest things to do when it comes to buying your first house.  It all boils down to changing…

Pan African Film Festival - Movie Review: "Leimert Park Voices"

It all started on Facebook, with an invitation, then at the box office, then in the lobby and at last in the warmth of the movie theater. It was like a family reunion. I walked into the theater and saw friends who I hadn’t seen in years.

I made my way to my seat, and then, just before the movie started, the Directors/Producers were making their way down the isle when Paul Calderon (Co-Producer, Co-Director, Editor) spotted me and stopped to remind Alan Swyer (Co-Producer,…

Tribute to Fred Horn - R.I.P.

Tonight my heart grew heavy as I stopped by Sika’s shop during the Art Walk and saw a memorial tribute honoring Fred Horn, this was the firs time I heard that Fred Horn had passed away. He passed a couple of weeks ago due to health complications related to diabetes and high blood pressure.

I last saw Fred at Kaos Network two Art Walks ago in November. Ben Caldwell was holding a filmmaker’s symposium where Fred and I had a chance to share some laughs with the crowd and give props to…

Collaborators in South Los Angeles-A group of collaborative journalists in Leimert Park is pooling their skills to investigate the Marlton Square "redevelopment hell."

What do concerned citizens of the inner-city do when they feel that the mainstream press has let the community down as a watchdog over a major redevelopment projects?

They watch out for themselves.

Move over citizen journalism — make room for collaborative journalism, a new effort online. Its purveyors hope it will grow into a sort of synthesis of bloggers and journalists with press passes. The members of the joint effort want to take a hard look at one of the many…

Leimert Park-a poem of lovers

Leimert Park and me go back

Like Sydney and hip hop tracks

and just the way the sounds in Brooklyn and the Bronx

make my head nod

The drum circles within you

sync up with the way my heart throbs

The way the sun shines on you at dusk…

Neighborhood Watch Programs Lead to New View of LAPD in Leimert Park

The Sixth Avenue Neighborhood Watch in Leimert Park is the latest in a trend of community groups that are taking steps to keep the community

safe — and also serving as emblems of the improved relations between

the residents of Leimert Park and the Los Angeles Police Department

(LAPD).

It wasn't always so. Back in 1965 the relationship between residents

of Leimert Park and LAPD was often hostile and adversarial.… Continue
