A CRITICAL JUNCTURE FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS - A Road Map Toward Solution...

"The slavery that captures the mind and imprisons the motivation, perception, aspiration and identity in a web of anti-self images, generating a personal and collective self-destruction, is more cruel than the shackles on the wrists and ankles. The slavery that feeds the mind, invading the soul of man, destroying his loyalties to himself and establishing allegiance to forces which destroy him, is an even worse form of capture." -- Dr. Naim Akbar (1996)

"This is a critical juncture in… Continue

South L.A. Youth Blog About Challeges to get to College

Every year, Community Coalition's youth program, South Central Youth Empowered through Action (SCYEA) takes about 30 local high school students to the Bay Area to visit universities and take a special Black Panther tour.

For many South L.A. youth, this is a life-altering trip. Many have never been out of their communities, most have never stepped foot on a college campus. Working-class black and brown youth from communities like South… Continue

PHOTOS BY HOSEA

The photos that I recently posted in Leimert Park Beat-my life line to "the Village since moving to St. Louis-were taken by my friend Reggie Turner. His "eye" knows the elements of "get the shot". I'm happy to share his art with you, "people of "the Village". And for you LPB, your flow is like the Mississippi River, life line.

Take Two Pills and Call Someone Who Loves You

Yeah, I'm over it just like the church song on, "I Can Do Bad By Myself." I told myself, one more time

and I give up. I think its been 78 times. Jesus only said 77 and I haven't tried to count but this is it. I refuse to accept the blame. I'm hurt, yes, I'm affected, no doubt. I'm not alien--I have human feelings. When someone else throws their baggage, or garbage, off on me, I refuse to let it pile up. I'll accept recyclables and use what I can from the situation, but the rest is going to… Continue

comfortable (inspired by the festivities as the 1st Annual Leimert Part Art & Music Festival 9/7/09)

i feel comfortable here

it almost is weird

feeling free to be myself,

not adjusting for fear

of unacceptance

or feeling the disgust of someone

else's distaste

to be in a setting where my blackness is embraced

i love wearing my cornrows or cropped curly hair,

and still feel gorgeous and makin' dudes stare

i love when black men bow down to me

and call me their sister

despite of not looking like the

girls in magazine pictures

I… Continue

Free food in Leimert Park Today and Lots to do this weekend

THURSDAY

The Crenshaw church of christ is giving away free food at the poorly named 10th Avenue Pharmacy on the corner of Sutro and MLK (Leimert Blvd).

The church is across the street and they just came and knocked on my door to let me know. They apparently do this every week. 323-292-2100
