By Emily Henry of Intersections South LA and Eddie North-Hager of LeimertParkBeat.com

Santa Barbara Plaza has been whitewashed, boarded up, security gates padlocked. Most of the 240 small and large shops once here have been relocated, were bought out or have gone out of business.

Collaborators in South Los Angeles-A group of collaborative journalists in Leimert Park is pooling their skills to investigate the Marlton Square "redevelopment hell."

What do concerned citizens of the inner-city do when they feel that the mainstream press has let the community down as a watchdog over a major redevelopment projects?

They watch out for themselves.

Move over citizen journalism — make room for collaborative journalism, a new effort online. Its purveyors hope it will grow into a sort of synthesis of bloggers and journalists with press passes. The members of the joint effort want to take a hard look at one of the many…

Burglaries in Leimert Park

In the past week, a spike in burglaries has taken place along the strip of 39th St. between Crenshaw Blvd and Arlington Ave. The crimes occurred during the day when people were at work. On one occasion, two suspects bolted out of a house when they observed the female resident approaching the house after leaving her parked car.

Keep your eyes open.

If anyone sees anything that looks suspicious, do not hesitate to call the LAPD, Southwest Division:… Continue

Councilman Bernard Parks remembers a time when people on the hills of View Park, Angeles Vista and Baldwin Hills all came down for the plethora of local businesses in Santa Barbara Plaza, known by some as Marlton Square.

Waiting for Marlton - Stalled redevelopment mars Baldwin Hills neighborhood and Crenshaw Plaza businesses

The $30 million upgrade of the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Plaza is underway just a year or two after new owners came in and paid more than $100 million for this prized piece of real estate.

But across the street, it's taken decades to redevelop Marlton Square, which sits in shambles a stone's throw from the world famous Debbie Allen Studios and the nicest Fatburger and Taco Bell you'll ever see. And of course the Magic Johnson Theater and Sears.… Continue
