The $30 million upgrade of the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Plaza is underway just a year or two after new owners came in and paid more than $100 million for this prized piece of real estate.
But across the street, it's taken decades to redevelop Marlton Square, which sits in shambles a stone's throw from the world famous Debbie Allen Studios and the nicest Fatburger and Taco Bell you'll ever see. And of course the Magic Johnson Theater and Sears.
Ken Lombard, president of mall owner Capri Urban Investors, said it's a real possibility.
Lombard was a contender for the redevelopment contract as Magic Johnson's partner.
"We have a tremendous amount of interest and want to do everything we can to help facilitate that development moving forward," Lombard told Emily Henry, who is partnering with LeimertParkBeat.com to do this story about Marlton Square.
Emily Henry, managing editor of Intersections: The South LA Report writes at Spot.us: "A little more than twenty years ago, the area was home to hundreds of businesses that formed the center of a community. Redevelopment efforts since have failed out of the gate. The most recent, in the early 2000s, included a financially inviable investor named Chris Hammond and his company Capital Vision Equities. After initiating the process by building a senior housing complex, which is still unfinished and lies vacant on the corner, Hammond went bankrupt and disappeared from the scene.:
