Sylvia Lacy from Herb Wesson's office contacted my neighbor, Norman Gilmore to let him know that Trader Joe's has expressed interest in putting in a store at Crenshaw & Rodeo. (Ralph's will be leaving that location when redevelopment starts, and isn't planning to come back.)

Norman is the Secretary on United Neighborhoods Neighborhood Council (…

Leimert Park takes on the Space Shuttle parade; attend Thursday's meetings

At a meeting a few months ago, residents somewhat seriously suggested they would lie down in front of the space shuttle to keep it from going through Leimert Park. Some one said the streets were already messed up (to put in new sewers and for resurfacing projects) and another said there was already too much construction (to bring the nearly billion dollar light rail to our neighborhood).

But it sounds like we are on the right path to get to see history and to save as many trees as…

Why Americans Could Lose in November...

In 2004, at the sweet and naive age of 24, I committed myself to registering voters and educating co-workers, family members, friends, and neighbors about the upcoming election. Not only did I believe it was my duty to inform my peers about Candidate John Kerry's policies, but I found it equally as important to share information about the political decisions that are often the most neglected, yet have the strongest impact on our daily life: Our state and city elections and propositions. My…

LEARNING A BETTER OFFENSE

I've witnessed a great many defensive responses in my nearly 8 years of living in Baldwin/Crenshaw/Leimert by going to community meetings and speaking with fellow residents.  I've listened to a lot of complaints.  I've been party to a ton of outrage.  I'm not pointing fingers; I've been right there grumbling alongside everyone.

I know some of the community malaise has to do with the constant barrage of issues that always seem to be occurring around us.  For years we've been…
