This isn't a huge surprise - in June the supermarket chain's parent company, Supervalu Inc., reported that its first-quarter profit fell by nearly half compared with a year earlier. The company also said it was reviewing its options with financial advisers, which often means that it might be on the block. The CEO was recently let go. All told, Supervalu is expected to close 60 underperforming stores by Dec. 1 (the chain still has more than 350 locations). Each store usually staffs between 50 and 100 workers, though the company did not provide any details on layoffs. From AP:
Supervalu and other supermarket chains have struggled in recent years amid intensifying competition from big-box retailers such as Target Corp. and Wal-Mart Corp., as well as dollar stores and drugstores that are expanding their grocery sections and luring away customers with lower prices. But even among its peers, Supervalu has been a laggard and has failed to adapt.

Thanks Ed for the clarification on the Crenshaw store status. And Heather, I wholeheartedly agree with you. The Crenshaw store could be a LOT better. Its not bad, but they tend to run out of a lot of key things and don't always restock fast enough. Considering the volum of customers that come there, you would think the management would make more effort to insure the quality as well as the quantity of items is better monitored. Sorry to hear the LaBrea store will be closing. I just hope when it closes, it doesn't become yet another eyesore.
Eddie...
YES--they need to do some upgrades to the Crenshaw store. We are worthy of FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY---NOT EVERY 4 DAYS!!!! We deserve BETTER!!!

That is sad. I go there a lot, since it's on my way home from work. Have gotten to know many of their employees over the last 6 years. Hope they don't get a raw deal when they're laid off. Also wonder how long that space will stay empty?
Good to know that they're keeping the Crenshaw location going though.
Thanks for sharing.
Statement from the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza regarding Albertson's:
“We have been assured that the Albertsons at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw will not be closing its doors. That said, we are engaged in ongoing conversations with the grocer’s management about elevating the store to a Class-A level. We recently completed a $35 million renovation of the mall, and many of our retailers have invested significantly to bring their stores to an extremely high standard. This is what our customers desire and deserve. With Albertsons going through significant changes as an organization, we will take the opportunity to encourage their management to embrace the same high-quality standards that Baldwin Hills Crenshaw embodies.”
I believe you are right Heather. I've contacted the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza management to make sure. Sad in either case.
