The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl is a new, compelling web series that has taken the online world by storm. With rave reviews and financial support from fans, the web series created and written by the show’s star Issa Rae, is in its second season. On Thursday, August 30, 2012, from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m., at the California African American Museum (CAAM), Issa Rae, will discuss her success, next moves and will screen clips from The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl. Food trucks will be conveniently stationed in front of CAAM prior to the event.
The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girlincludes a 12-member cast and is a comedic take on the life of an African American girl named “J” (played by Issa Rae) chronicling awkward encounters of everyday life. The first season explores J’s love life obsessions between two potential love interests - the character “Fred,” a co-worker who plays hard to get and J’s Caucasian friend “White Jay”. The monthly web series offers a platform for Rae to address issues she can relate to while still satisfying her a different love of offbeat humor.
“I didn’t see any of the content I wanted to see on mainstream television, so I decided to create it,” said Issa Rae.
A Los Angeles native, Issa Rae received her B.A. in filmmaking from Stanford University and also studied at the New York Film Academy. She was inspired to create this series from the lack of dry humor among programs featuring people of color. With shows such as Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Office in mind, Rae created a web series in which she can relate to the protagonist and still entertain with dry, quirky humor. Rae has two other web series: The ‘F’ Word, a ‘mockumentary’ series based on a hip-hop trio’s attempt to make it in the music industry; and Dorm Diaries, an amateur series Rae created during her senior year of college. Issa Rae has garnered over 8.8 million views between her three webseries, and just short of 70,000 faithful subscribers on YouTube. Following the discussion with Rae, will be a mix-and-mingle including music and a DJ.
