Tavis Smiley Radio features Leimert Park. Producer tours village for story on blogging.

When a producer from the Tavis Smiley Radio Show asked me to talk with her about Leimert Park Beat.com, I siezed the opportunity. I said sure, just meet me in Leimert Park Village.

A few days later Leshelle Sargent walked less than a block from Tavis Smiley’s office near the Pollo Loco to the fountain at 43rd and Degnan.

I took her around the village for nearly two hours, introducing her to James Fugate at EsoWon Bookstore, one of the Aswirl Twins at the Lucy Florence Coffee House and to Walter Melton of Scribe Skid Row, and now a columnist at LA Beez .

LeShelle picked up a menu at New Orleans Vieux Carre and we sadly learned that 5th Street Dick’s closed.

The segment is a quick “History and Evolution of the Blogosphere” and how more and more people are getting their news from citizen reporters on the internet. Leimert Park shared the bill with Cornel West, Mike Krzyzewski and Bela Fleck!

Only Walter, the Village and I made the final cut - but hopefully they'll be back to do a feature solely on Leimert Park: The Soul of Los Angeles.

Tavis Smiley, produced with Public Radio International, airs Friday from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. on KPCC.
