So what brings you to Leimert Park Beat? Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I'm a Ph.D student from Cracow, Poland, currently a visiting researcher at UCLA Film and Media Studies. I write my dissertation on Blaxploitation cinema and my main focus is on the movie-going culture in Los Angeles in the 70s.
I'm putting together the set of interviews that make part of work, particularly among Leimert Park citizens as essential cultural institution for Black community in Los Angeles.
I'm looking for spectators that grow up in the 70s and were active cinema-goers who remember seeing movies like "Shaft", "Super Fly", "Coffy" etc. in movie theaters and could tell me about their memories, habits, behavior, the cultural and social atmosphere of the given period.
Particularly, I find very fascinating the story of Baldwin Theatre, built in 1949 by 3741 S La Brea Avenue, one of the few nation's first-run black owned movie houses. It was closed in 1981 and there is very little information available about it's owners, history or audience. Also, I am very fond of the cultural memory of cinema so in that sense my project is very close to the idea of oral history.
If you Sirs would like to participate in my study or know anyone who would be interested as well, I would be extremely grateful. Also, any information on Baldwin Theatre would be an immense help.
I hope you find it interesting and if you have any additional questions please don't hesitate to contact me.
