This month at the Art Walk we enjoyed the entire day which started with the art galleries new display. The banner read "Women Are Not Seeking Your Validation". We went around the corner and next to the stage we were performing on was a collage of coffin lids being painted by any one who wanted to. The names on the coffins are a tribute to those who have died by law enforcement. There is a March on Tuesday, April 7th, 2015; Downtown Los Angeles...they're asking for an independent review board. It was stated of the 621 deaths in Los Angeles Country since 2000 not one of the police officers have been charged nor fired. I painted one for my son while waiting for stage time; it totally changed the format of our show. Celebrating National Women's Month Sister Efua opened the show and read her favorite part of Zora Neale Hurston. Celebrating her birthday, the Oracle...she just did what the Oracle does. I recited the Poet's Jazz House Anthem "When the World is Heavy" as a tribute to all the children and the people who've lost loved ones by law enforcers. I had to lift up the mood with Carol King's "Beautiful" and my own "What is a Black Woman" and I dedicate this to every woman, no matter the color of your skin." The Reggae Sensation Ladee Dred closed the show with "Make Shift Memorial...stop the killing. Then a parade of coffins circled the stage and tears filled the air...you really should have been there.
We circled the park, shopped with the vendors, ate great food, fresh healthy juice, met new friends, ran into old, went our own ways and came back together, enjoyed the quiet meditative healing space of Melchizedek's before the Reggae band started and really enjoyed the "Free Angela" movie under the stars and really, really enjoyed a free copy of the DVD.
