On Thursday morning May 27 hundreds of people from the South Los Angeles community went to 1 Gateway Plaza in downtown Los Angeles to support LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas's proposal to build a Metro Station at Leimert Park and to run a section of the Metro along Crenshaw Blvd. underground. Metro board officials approved construction of the station at Leimert Park, but did not guarantee funding. In effect, it seemed they said yes and no in the same breath. Most of those who gathered to support Ridley Thomas's proposal, many of whom were elderly men and women who depend on public transportation, were shunted off to the MTA cafeteria or the spillover room to watch the proceedings on small television monitors. It's difficult to say if there voices were heard or even if their presence was felt, since they were made largely invisible in the proceedings.
