Current Councilman and former police chief Bernard Parks will battle state Sen. and former councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas to run for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in June. So much for a new voice.

The seat has been held by the invisible Yvonne B. Burke, who hasn't lived in these parts for years.

Ridley-Thomas expects to raise $1.5 million for the contest and told the LA Times voters would have a clear choice between very different candidates.

Ridley-Thomas, 52, who lives in Leimert Park and has spent five years in the Legislature. He previously served for 12 years on the Los Angeles City Council.

Parks, 62, in his fourth year on the council, wouldn't talk to the Times for the story. Why?

There wasn't much coverage when Parks announced he would run.

So who would you choose. And what's the deal talking about Yvonne. She may not have lived in the community, but she cared about the community. She's from the community. She is 70 years old. She came from a time that even if you had a degree if you were black you couldn't move to Santa Monica, so when she was able to move to Brentwood she did. So what?

If she were 40 I could see you giving her a hard time, but she is 70 years old.

She comes from a world that you don't understand, hell I don't even understand it. I just know that other older black people admire her a great deal and she hasn't been a jerk.

I notice you have LAist linked. Did you see their piece on Watts? It was pretty interesting.

So you don't like Park or Ridley, so who do you like?

Wanted to add, though my initial reply to your post was a bit snarky. I like what you're doing. I like this site. I like that you talk about more than freakin' bars and bands, because that's a little annoying.

Hi Browne -
No worries. That's not snarky - that's your opinion. Give it to me. I kind of like Parks, but he's so divisive and I don't know anybody who likes him in this area. And Ridley-Thomas seems like a good guy - but look at what didn't and isn't getting done in our community - big things like the dump called Marlton Square (which is also called Santa Barbara Plaza) and the Village. I was just hoping a newer voice who hasn't made politics their life's work would step up and lead.
And until recently I like Yvonne, but she really let this area down with her non-handling fiasco of King Drew and then her residency issue. I don't mind if she lives in Brentwood at all, but once she makes that choice she should pass the leadership mantle onto some one who lives in this district. That's why we call them representatives.
