“Armed with the knowledge of our past, we can with confidence charter a course for our future. Culture is an indispensable weapon in the freedom struggle. We must take hold of it and forge the future with the past.” – Malcolm X Speech at Founding Rally of the Organization of Afro-American Unity (28 June 1964)
Sankofa is a multi-media, multi-discipline project by Community Services Unlimited inc. (CSU) looking at their work through the lens of their organization’s history, which is rooted in its founding as the non-profit arm of the Southern California chapter of the Black Panther Party in 1977.
The dialogue will welcome innovators including retired international basketball player-turned-farmer and MacArthur Genius Grant awardee Will Allen of Growing Power, D’artagnan Scorza of the Social Justice Learning Institute, Kadiri Sennefer Ra of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Coalition, and representatives of CSU.
Plus archive tours of CSU's section of the exhibit entitled “The Revolution Will Not Be Funded”, music, live performance by Sheldon Bailey, healthy nibbles, an introduction to some of CSU’s current research work, and a produce stand.
This event was organized by Community Services Unlimited inc. as part of the programming around the West Adams Collectors Club exhibit.
