Musicians of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in a jam session hosted by the Ensemble at the renowned World Stage. A cultural landmark established by jazz drummer Billy Higgins and poet Kamau Daáood, The Stage has been the heart of L.A.'s jazz scene since 1989 and produced some of the leaders in today's creative music. The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance Ensemble at UCLA includes: Roni Eytan (harmonica), Aidan Lombard (trumpet), Lenard Simpson (alto saxophone), Chris Lewis (tenor saxophone), Paul Cornish (piano), Emma Dayhuff (bass) and Malachi Whitson (drums). These musicians are students at the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. This intensive, graduate-level college program enables a select group of the world’s most promising young musicians to study tuition-free with legendary jazz artists and educators including NEA Jazz Masters Herbie Hancock, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, Dianne Reeves and Wayne Shorter, among others.
