Event Description

Pioneering, experimental classical composer of the early 20th Century, Dr. William Grant Still, will be honored with a special birthday concert in tribute to his legacy and creative output in the West Adams community on Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 2-4pm. Birthday cake will be served following the concert.
The concert will feature rarely performed compositions and will be held at The William Grant Still Arts Center, the Department of Cultural Affairs Community Arts Facility founded in 1977 and named in Dr. Still’s honor.
The performance by Mark Broyard (vocals) and Aeros Pierce (piano) will cover the music and arrangements of Dr. Still. The moving and provocative “I Dream a World” excerpted from his opera Troubled Island, with words by Langston Hughes, will open the concert. Three “art song” selections from Dr. Still’s Songs of Separation Song Cycle including “Parted” (words by Paul Lawrence Dunbar) and If You Should Go (words by Countee Cullen); as well as other compositions. Special guest Daniel Corral will join on accordion to perform Still’s innovative reworking of the spiritual “Here’s One.”  Birthday cake will be served.

Known as the “Dean of African American Composers,” Dr. William Grant Still wrote over 150 credited compositions and broke new ground in music. In 1936, he was the first African American to conduct a major orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. He was awarded 2 Guggenheim fellowships for his work, and in 1939 wrote, with Langston Hughes, Troubled Island. He passed away living in the West Adams neighborhood in 1978.

Founded in 1977, William Grant Still Arts Center is a facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs offering summer camp, winter workshops, music and art classes for adults and youth, an exhibition space, concerts, and places for community meetings and the neighborhood to come together.
