Profile Information

So what brings you to Leimert Park Beat? Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My family settled in South Central LA in the late 1940s. I have lived all over the city and I moved back to this community in 2009. I ran SEE-LA's Crenshaw Farmers' Market from 2013-2021, and am now Manager of Urban Agriculture & Farmers' Market Projects for SEE-LA. Before that, a group of us, including Dr Rasheeda Hawk and Ben Caldwell started meeting at Kaos Network in 2011 and created the Seeds of Carver Urban Farm Collective. Around that time, Bahni Turpin was interested in the formation of an organic food co-op, and I signed up to help on the steering committee of the SoLA Food Co-op. I am an actor and writer, my husband is a film and TV composer and my two sons are multidisciplinary artists and writers. One is in Queens NY and the other is here and often performs around town and in Leimert Park.

In LPV in early 1988, the very day I found out I was pregnant with my elder son, I was PULLED into a circle to be human shield to protect anti-Apartheid activist Allan Boesak. I am grateful to have been a part of history, but I wasn't asked! Lol!
