Top 10 LA high schools in national poll include 4 charters, 3 magnets; LACES scores best in LAUSD

In the broad U.S. rankings. News & World Report of all public high schools in the country, including LA's top 10 include four independent charters, three magnets and three traditional schools.

The Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies is the leading LA school group and the only LA Unified school in the top 20. It is 18th in the state and 138th national. The school was honored last month for the unique merit and transformation of Magnet Schools of America.

The magazine reviewed nearly 20,000 public high schools nationwide and ranked them on many factors, including state test scores, the number of students taking Advanced Placed and level courses of college and general college readiness.

Shown at a ranking of 47 LA Unified schools, or 19 percent of all local high schools, ranked above the California average.

“The results reaffirmed our commitment to prepare our students for college and career,” said Chief Academic Officer Frances Gipson. "LA Unified is proud of our students, teachers and leaders for their scientific achievements, both local and national. This recognition represents the best of the best."

LACES Principal Harold Boger emphasized that 90 percent of LACES students take Advanced Placed classes, and the minority percentage is 72 percent.

“We are clearly thrilled to be recognized for creating a culture where students are not afraid to challenge themselves by taking AP courses,” he said. "We have made a special effort to eliminate middle school courses with the effect of monitoring students at an early stage of either being AP or non-AP students. In fact all of us students know they will be taking AP World History in the 10th grade and all of their previous courses will be sufficient preparation to succeed in this course. "

But they may be victims of their success. Boger added, "On the other hand, we are a little worried that we have done a very good job in developing this AP culture to students which is probably time to encourage students to consider taking fewer AP courses.Currently almost 40 percent of our juniors and seniors are taking four or more AP courses or free essays courses.Even students are constantly looking for ways to eventually to be successful in these courses, we noticed that the stress level of some students increased. It led us to pay more attention to the emotional development of the students in our efforts to maintain high academic standards. "

The second highest ranked LA Unified school is the Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy in 196 nationals, and the third is the charter school Magnolia Science Academy 2 in 223. Two charter schools, Wallis Annenberg High and Bright Star Secondary Charter Academy, are in 246th and 247th nationwide, and fourth and fifth in LA Unified rankings.

Listed in the sixth district is the magnetic school Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High, at 252 nationwide, seventh at the Elizabeth Learning Center at 277, and eighth at Downtown Business High at 360.

Rounding the top 10 locally is the charter school Alliance Gertz-Ressler Richard Merkin 6-12 Complex at 383 and, at 406, the traditional school Foshay Learning Center.

Five Alliance College-Ready Public Schools are in the top 20 schools in California in the ranking.

Dan Katzir, the CEO of the Alliance, said in a statement, "A breaking record of 14 Alliance high schools has been recognized. Six are ranked in the top 10 percent of high schools in Los Angeles County. We are proud to announce that, once again, Alliance schools are ranked among the best in the country. "

Green Dot has one school in the top 200 high schools nationwide, Animo Leadership Charter High which came in 168, and six schools in the top 200 charter schools nationwide.

KIPP has two schools in California's top 20, both in Northern California.

Magnolia Public Schools has two of California's top 100 schools and also has a top charter at LA Unified, Magnolia Science Academy 2 in Van Nuys. This is the 66th highest charter high school in the country.
