W. KAMAU BELL Socio-Political Comedian 'n Dad on CNN-Shades... "Reproductive Politics in the South" Episode #4 - Sun., May 19th 7 & 10PM PT ~

Ready for a weirdly timely deep-dive into reproductive politics in the South?

Ep. 4 of United Shades airs Sunday, May 19th at 10PM ET/7PM PT on CNN + repeat episodes

Maybe you also spent this week feeling lots of feelings about all of the new anti-abortion legislation that passed in Alabama and Georgia.  Maybe you're asking yourself, "Why is this happening?!  What can we do?!" United Shades of America is here to help!  In this week's sadly all-too-timely episode, we're headed to Jackson, Mississippi to learn about how folks are fighting for reproductive justice and reproductive rights.

Reproductive Justice

This week in Jackson, we're highlighting the stories of women of color who have been both leaders in the movement for reproductive justice and the people most heavily impacted by issues like restrictive abortion laws, inadequate sex education, inaccessible health care, and lack of support for parents. You'll get to hear directly from high school and college students working to overturn Mississippi’s archaic sex education laws that teach "abstinence and abstinence plus." I also talk with attorney Aarin Michele Williams who supports women who have been criminalized for their pregnancy outcomes. Poet Amanda Furdge will tell you why Mississippi is a sitcom from the '80s, and activist Laurie Bertram Roberts will tell you why Mississippi is ALSO where folks show up for each other and develop organizing strategies that serve the whole country.

I Got a Vasectomy
and Here's Why I'm Telling You

This week we focus on how reproductive politics affect people with uteruses, but working on the episode got me thinking about how these issues affect me personally.  I'm the father of three amazing kids, and my wife, Melissa, and I don't want any more, so we decided I should have a vasectomy. Anyone who knows me knows that I have to make things make sense to me before I do them. For a guy who didn't do that great in school, I love a research project. I had to do two kinds of research for this: the external kind where I read up on an idea and talk to people about it and the internal kind where I figure out what this means for me.  Watch this video and read my thoughts about how it all went down.
