What a beautiful day for a King parade and Leimert Park festival; Images of 27th annual MLK Parade in Los Angeles

I remember when I lived in a state that did not want to truly recognize King Day. But today, 20 years later, as Al Sharpton would say, most people in Arizona have to take the day off and think about why.

Images from the 27thAnnual Kingdom Day Parade honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Crowds lined the route, a few people deep at most points as the sun came out around 11:30 to shine on. The festival in Leimert Park Village at 43rd and Degnan was busier earlier this year - I think it's reaqlly catching on.

I walked my block just off of King right after the parade and only found one empty BK coffee (you know who you are!). But it did feel like we had some very gracious visitors.

I was a bit apprehensive about the Parade because I live very close to King and dreaded having so many folks possibly spilling onto my property (like last year). But it turned out to be a great day, folks were very cool, the police were not overbearing in any way. I actually enjoyed it. Saw my old pal Walter Melton taking pics and gave us a chance to catch up after 50 years. And what knnocked me out was the City Maintenence was right there after the Parade ended and cleaned the streets up pronto. That's what I'm talkin aboit. Quite surreal seeing so many folks out on King. And everyone was happy-which enveloped the true spirit of MLK's Birthday & what it stands for.

My boys enjoyed the parade and festivities.  I love to see the streets of Leimert full....such a good feeling!

Oh, my!  Villaraigosa remembered there's a Los Angeles south of the 10 freeway?  Wish I could have been at the parade & after party today.  I know the neighborhood turned it out, as always.  Leimert Park knows how to host a celebration.
