The Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Plaza Walmart first opened January 2003 to acnhor the Caldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. The store was known as the art deco Walmart because it preserved some of the historic elements of the Broadway that was once there, like the spire.
Many interior details also were reminiscent of the 1940s. The remodels was necessary to compete as Target remodeled on La Cienega, adding a grocery store component, Fresh and easy is immennt on Adams and Crenshaw and the Ralphs on Jefferson could soon be a Trader Joes (according to Herb Wesson's office).
“This store was one of the first new businesses that opened in the area and gave this struggling mall and neighborhood new life,” Los Angeles City Councilmember Bernard C. Parkssaid in a press release. "I’m proud that they’ve invested so much in this store, and in our neighborhood.”
The store will be having specials all day - the ribbon cutting happened this morning
As part of Walmart’s commitment to the communities in which it operates, a grant from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation will be presented to Friends of the Expo Center.
The Friends of EXPO Center supports the recreational, sports, cultural, and educational programs that are provided by EXPO Center, an intergenerational recreation center in Exposition Park
On Tuesday morning, Walmart presented the Friends of EXPO Center with a grant for $50,000 to support Afterschool Educational Enrichment for At-Risk Youth in South L.A.
The new store is tailored for the Baldwin Hills community, featuring a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, fresh cakes and bread, as well as meats, cheeses and prepared foods. In addition to the fresh produce and bakery the store will carry groceries including frozen foods, meat and dairy products and organic items

Walmart will now employ approximately 325 associates, which includes the nearly 25 permanent positions that were added due to the remodel. The average wage at Walmart for full-time hourly associates in California is approximately $12.82 per hour. :(
