The California African American Museum (CAAM) presents Target Sundays at CAAM –Caribbean style. The annual Caribfest at CAAM takes place Sunday, September 1, 2013, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., and will bring together Caribbean communities, their cultural contributions as well as influential celebrations.
Co-hosted by Jeffrey Anderson-Gunter and actress Shauna Chin, Target Sundays at CAAM will feature live performances in dance, song and spoken word. Performers include the dance group Iseiri Isanigu Cultural Group, Jamaican poet Lyndall Andrew Rhoden, Reggae artist Errol Bonnick and many more.
CAAM’s galleries will open at 11:00 a.m. for visitors to explore Afro-Cuban artist Manuel Mendive’s multi-faceted visual art and performance exhibition, “Things that Cannot Be Seen Any Other Way: The Art of Manuel Mendive.” On view at CAAM through October 20, 2013, Mendive explores the relationships between the nature of religion and its visual language while testifying to his deep commitment to Afro-Cuban culture.
Also rich with Caribbean influence is Roberto Chile’s photo exhibition, AFRODESCENDIENTES – on view at CAAM through October 13, 2013. The exhibition explores the African diaspora in Cuba through Chile’s stunning photographs, curated by Juan Carlos Moya.
Starting at noon, local educator and artist Teresa Tolliver will host an art workshop for all ages. CAAM events are free and open to the public. RSVP is encouraged at (213) 744-2024 Parking is $10, in the lot adjacent to CAAM at 39th and Figueroa Streets.
