The
Los Angeles Times asked "four randomly selected people in different parts of the city who are not quite juniors and not quite seniors" to describe their favorite weekend.
Of course, Leimert Park made the list. Lawrence Ross, a writer, talked about Rick Kingi's Kajukenbo Defense Institute, Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, Coley's Caribbean Cuisine on Florence and La Brea, and The World Stage,
Eso-Won Books and Heroik Entertainment salon in the Village.
Highlights for me would include: placing an order at Best in the West Tacos on my way home from work Friday evening. I'd then drive home, change into shorts and flip flops and walk back to pick up my tacos. Then I'd wait another 20 minutes for my veggie bbq chicken taco to be ready, holding that claim check in my hand like it was a lottery ticket. I know, I know it's worth it when you take that first bite - but not when you're waiting and hungry.
The th
eater - a few weeks back we saw "
Zorro in Hell" at the recently renovated Ricardo Montalban Theatre in Hollywood. The writers, based in LA, skewered the politicians but not without skewering the very people who put them in power - YOU AND ME. In the end, it was a call to action. The run was just extended through Sept. 9 and I highly recommend it.
Perhaps a bike ride - few things can compare to seeing downtown from a two-wheel perspective. And then have brunch at
Pete's , fantastic and cheap steak, amazing blue cheese french fries, great mac 'n cheese with terragon.
For a night cap, I would choose
Saints and Sinners near Culver City for it's "Pulp Fiction" vibe or the
Edison Bar downtown, a '20s themed speakeasy in a former powerplant. We used to go to the Cheerio by Babe and Ricky's, but it closed about a year ago.
For Sunday, after at stop at the LP Village drum circle, there would be enough time for a hike - Kenny Hahn, or the trail off of Jefferson in Culver City or a haul to the San Gabriel mountains (pictured).
