Demolition underway at Marlton Square/Santa Barbara Plaza

Finally - a really big step toward reclaiming the derelict 20 acres known as Marlton Square!

When LeimertParkBeat.com and Intersections South LA Report teamed up to produce the definitive story last year, there had been no movement for five years and everybody was ignoring the eyesore.

But residents and reporters teamed up and after months of digging, producing a movie, a timeline, an interactive parcel map, two feature length stories, a conversation began. The Los Angeles Times followed with a story. Redevelopment became a hot topic in the City Council election. One of our members and a key contributor to the Marlton Square project, Walter Melton, even won a national award for a column he wrote on the topic. And we kept plugging away with updates.

Thursday hundreds of community members, dozens of media outlets and many, many public officials were on hand to the see beginning of the end of this embarrassment.

This is great, I have waited for years for this.  We have such a nice area here and this place has been a eye sore. I just thanks everyone who put forth an effort to make this happen.

Nice! We have definitely led a conversation. It takes time, but we must continue to push for results.

Wonderful! Maybe some movement finally. This has been one depressing eyesore for a long time. When I was a kid and we had only been here a few years, we used to go to Wil Wright's for ice cream after a movie at Baldwin Theatre. It was a very nice plaza. Maybe it will be one day again.
