Although this artist resides in Dallas, TX, his work's theme is universal. From skid row in Los Angeles to the streets of Rio de Janeiro....
Quwwa Davis is the youngest of three children and is a life-long resident of Dallas, Tx. As a child, art to him was coloring books and wheels, and the most important rule was to stay within the lines to keep it neat!
Growing up as a teenager he was mostly involved in playing…

Great story in the New York Times and the Boston Globe about
the inspiration created by President Obama:"Perhaps not since John F. Kennedy, whose dusty portraits can still be seen in kitchens and barbershops and alongside the antique beer cans at bars like Manuel’s Tavern in Atlanta, has a presidency so fanned the flames of painterly ardor among hobbyist and professional artists," reports Randy Kennedy in the…

When a
producer from the Tavis Smiley Radio Show asked me to talk with her about Leimert Park Beat.com, I siezed the opportunity. I said sure, just meet me in Leimert Park Village.
A few days later Leshelle Sargent walked less than a block from Tavis Smiley’s office near the Pollo Loco to the fountain at 43rd and Degnan.
I took her around the village for nearly two hours, introducing her to…

I had the priviledge of meeting Hassan in the mid 80's when I lived in Hollywood, California and as fate has it, our paths crossed again.
He now lives in Chicago and has been there since the late 80's, but Hassan's history goes back to the mid 60's when this master bass player, at the time in his teens, was playing with "The First Family of Soul" The Five Stairsteps, best known for their 70's song O-o-h Child.
In the early 70's Hassan was playing with another legendary…

Lamonte McLemore is the creator of the legendary six time Grammy Award winning vocal group, The Fifth Dimension.
He was born in St. Louis, Mo. under the zodiac sign of Virgo. As one of four children, he only dreamed of playing baseball and pitching for the Cardinals was the fastest way he knew to escape the poverty.
"Maybe even try my other fascination, the art of photography... I was lucky enough early in my career to… Continue

Hello everyone. I thought I'd pass along some information that you might find interesting about new arrival routes that the Federal Aviation Administration has implemented into Los Angeles International Airport. Planes fly the same paths as they have traditionally flown, but they make less noise and emit less pollution into neighborhoods under and around the flight path.
Below is some information that I sent to the Los Angeles Times a couple of weeks ago. Below that is the story that…

Playing drums since he was eleven years old, Chukinho has had sticks in his hands for over 40 years. A student of legendary jazz drummer, Hal Blaine, Chukinho was a grounding member in many garage bands in the early 60s. He founded the Virginia/North Carolina-based premiere jazz group “Heroes” in the late 70s. Moving to New Orleans in 1986, he co-founded “Casa Samba,” New Orleans’ first Samba School. After many trips to Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, Bahia, to hone his skills, Chukinho was…

Steven Lopez - The Artist
"I was fond of art at an early age. When I was 4 years old my mom drew a cartoon character on paper. I nearly passed out from the excitement when she drew it. I remember my grandmother and I would take the bus to the Downtown fashion. I would sit next to the windows and noticed huge murals around the neighborhoods. When I would go to Sunday mass, the local church had a mural that I would look at when I… Continue

I’m Coming
Hey you!
I was hoping I could see you tonight.
He was like…
“I’m coming”
And like a thief in the night he came
Framed me with his attention
And with every extension
he loved me hard.
My guard had dissolved
as he solved every single problem
I had created from past anxieties.
The fight in me wanted to…
