I was really moved by this article I saw about African America journalist Kevin Weston's fight for his life. A new father who works for New America Media in Oakland, Mr. Weston was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer, and requires a bone marrow transplant. His time is very limited (doctors originally gave him 2 weeks to live) and his only chance is to find a matching donor.

The article says "Marrow matches are ethnically based and depend on one’s genetic makeup. Weston is African American and his most likely match will also be African American. Those who are not Caucasians are more likely to die of leukemia or other blood cancers because there is a shortage of ethnic minority donors on the national registry, noted Perry Bowens, recruitment manager of the northwestern district of the National Marrow Donor Program."

Thought I'd share this with the Leimert Park Beat community in case Mr. Weston's lifesaving match is among us.

Trader Joe's Wants to Know if We Want a Store in Our Neighborhood

Trader Joe's Wants to Know if We Want a Store in Our Neighborhood

Sylvia Lacy from Herb Wesson's office contacted my neighbor, Norman Gilmore to let him know that Trader Joe's has expressed interest in putting in a store at Crenshaw & Rodeo. (Ralph's will be leaving that location when redevelopment starts, and isn't planning to come back.)

Norman is the Secretary on United Neighborhoods Neighborhood Council (UNNC,) maintains the Jefferson Park United website, and is handy with spreading the word about things, which is why he was contacted.

Councilman Wesson's office is encouraging the community to express their support so Trader Joe's will know we're interested in them coming to our neighborhood. Norman has put together a petition you can sign if you want to tell Trader Joe's you support a store in our neighborhood.

The Benefits of Getting a Trader Joe's at Crenshaw & Rodeo

Ralphs has already announced it won't be coming back after the Crenshaw & Rodeo location gets redeveloped. And Albertsons just closed. So together with our new Fresh N' Easy a Trader Joe's would help make up for the stores we're losing, and make sure we still have a number of convenient choices for grocery shopping. I often shop at the Trader Joe's in Culver City because they have some of the best prices on staples like eggs and milk (plus they have those dried cherry "raisins" that I love!)

CLICK HERE to read and sign the petition

Just scroll down the page, fill in your info, click submit, and then be sure to CLICK ON THE CONFIRMATION LINK IN THE EMAIL YOU WILL RECEIVE so your signature will be considered valid.

Or you can also write a letter to Herb Wesson's office directly in support of the new store, and they will pass it on.

And please spread the word to anyone who might want to express their support. It's easy to do - you can just send them a link to this post, or a link directly to the petition page.
Thunder Soul at the Rave a Must Seetag:www.leimertparkbeat.com,2011-10-13:677129:BlogPost:766222011-10-13T00:34:39.000ZShelley Wenkhttps://www.leimertparkbeat.com/profile/ShelleyWenk

Last weekend my family went to see THUNDER SOUL. Presented by Jamie Foxx, this joyful movie follows the extraordinary alumni from Houston’s storied Kashmere High School Stage Band, who return home after 35 years to play a tribute concert for the 92-year-old “Prof,” their beloved band leader who broke the color barrier and transformed the school’s struggling jazz band into a world-class funk powerhouse in the early 1970s.

This is an amazing story of the power of music to change lives, and a testament to the impact of mentoring young people. Since it's a "small" movie, it will probably only be at the Rave through next weekend. It's not to be missed - inspiring for anybody who is or has ever been a kid, parent, or grandparent!
