Jim Ryerson, a documentary film producer specializing in Cuba, found himself in a traffic jam last week while trying to get to Wal-Mart. He noticed a parade in the distance and walked down to experience his first Kwanzaa.

Walking along the route, he apparently found himself in the staging area away from the crowds.

"It took me a while to realize that since there was no one else on the sidewalk, they were calling out to me. Yes here I was, a blond haired white man, cruising through a black celebration, and being welcomed as I would on St. Patrick’s day in my home town. Thankfully missing were the alcohol and the drunks looking for a fight with anyone not wearing green."

Ryerson formerly worked as a television news reporter in Los Angeles and has won numerous national and international awards for his work. You can see clips here.
