In this workshop, participants will be able to write, build, shoot, edit and share short movies they created. By using a diorama set and characters, Tabletop Moviemaking scales down the production process and shortens the time it takes to make a movie. The workshop will end with a screening of the rough-cut short films.
It would be great if you could BYOD (bring your own device) The best device to bring is an iPad with iMovie installed, this allows for editing the clips together. Otherwise any device with a camera and microphone works. If you DO NOT have an iPad or iPhone, we will have a few available for use or you can pair up with someone who does!
Brick Maier is the creator of Tabletop Moviemaking, a diorama approach to filmmaking with paper characters and settings that draws on the rich historical tradition of paper theater. He developed his method through a Fulbright fellowship in Ireland, where he researched simple moviemaking techniques and their potential for fostering literacy in marginalized communities. Today, Brick works closely with two non-profits focused on reading and writing, Young Storytellers Foundation and 826LA, and has taught at the Hammer Museum, LA Opera and many Los Angeles schools.
