L.A. Works, Los Angeles’ premier volunteer center for community and corporate service, will mobilize more than 1,000 volunteers to transform Leimert Park Village, on L.A. Works Day of Service, the organization’s signature day of service, on July 30. Community and corporate volunteers will join in a large-scale service project to support the Village’s efforts to make this hidden landmark an incubator for the continued development and preservation of African American art, culture, entrepreneurship and economic development in Los Angeles. The Village is the historical enclave of African and African American culture and arts in South Los Angeles, and is undergoing a community revival.
Sponsors include: Northrop Grumman; Accenture; The Home Depot; Starbucks Coffee; AT&T; McDermott Will & Emery; Perkins+ Will; Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza; West Area Neighborhood Development Council; and bgreen apparel.
L.A. Works is celebrating its 20th year of community service and action, by mobilizing Southern Californians to provide more than 1 million hours of service throughout Los Angeles.
Hundreds of volunteers will build signage to welcome visitors to the village, create community murals, restore historic building tiles, build African drums for a youth-oriented music program, plant flowers and shrubbery, and assisting nonprofits and schools throughout the neighborhood.
Volunteers will revitalize the 42nd Street Elementary School campus, which provides services to more than 400 students in grades K-5. Because research has shown that children learn better in an environment in which they feel proud and comfortable, they will be creating murals, painting school buildings and grounds, and planting flowers and shrubs for a literacy garden.
Volunteers, please register at www.laworks.com or call 323-224-6510.
