2016 marks the 40th Anniversary of Floricanto’s presence as part of the Los Angeles’ dance landscape. This momentous occasion will be celebrated with a full evening concert that will reprise some of the company’s most memorable choreographies and the premiering of new works created for this occasion by both Gema Sandoval, director of the company, and Christie Rios, Sandoval’s oldest daughter and heir apparent to Floricanto. This colorful program will take place on Saturday, June 18 at 8:00 PM. The Nate Holden Performing Arts Center is located at 4718 Washington Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90016. Tickets are $20 pre-sale and $25 at the door. Group Rates are also available To purchase tickets on line go to: http://www.danzafloricantousa.com/store.php . Floricanto’s Sobreviviendo ,Sobresaliendo-Surviving, Excelling Program celebrates the company’s 40th Anniversary, not only as a folklorico company, but also their 40 years of making Chicano dance in Los Angeles. During the first portion of the program the audience will be taken down memory lane where Floricanto will reprise some of the company’s signature pieces like Renacimiento-Rebirth, The Promise and portions of its popular Dia de Los Muertos program. The second half of the program will consist of the more recent company works, such as Huapango and Stereotypes, as well as the premiere of four new works.
Renacimiento-Rebirth was created 40 years ago by Gema Sandoval to be part of the entertainment for the then nascent Latino political community’s first Unity Dinner at the Los Angeles’ Convention Center attended by over five thousand Latinos. The Promise was co-choreographed 15 years later by Gema Sandoval and Loretta Livingston as part of their tribute to a Cesar Chavez program entitled, Si Se Puede-Yes You Can. Floricanto’s now 15 year old Dia de los Muertos program continues to be the only dance event created specifically to celebrate the Chicano community’s seasonal holiday. Huapango was Sandoval’s effort to choreograph Mexican footwork to classical music for the company’s 20th Anniversary. While Stereotypes was Sandoval’s response to the violence that has seen the birth of the Black/Brown Lives Matter movement.
Because footwork is not only the essence of folklorico but also Floricanto’s chosen tool for creating their version of Chicano dance, both Sandoval and Christie Rios will premiere pieces that reflect their specific dance aesthetic through their contemporary interpretations of footwork.
Also joining them on stage will be Martha Gonzales’ Entre Mujeres Project, an innovative percussion-based music composition project that generated memorable songs to be reprised for the program that evening at the Holden.
Floricanto’s Sobreviendo, Sobresaliendo program is part of Floricanto’s current 40th Anniversary Celebration. This joyful production is the perfect family choice for celebrating our community's Mexican heritage without leaving home. Bring your mom, your dad, your children and grandchildren and make this a wonderful family event.
