Dorthy Johnson of Pocatello, Idaho, was the first African American and the first person from Idaho to be a semi-finalist in a major beauty pageant. Fifty years ago, in the midst of the civil rights struggle and several months before the passage of the historic Civil Rights Act of 1964, Ms. Johnson won the title of Miss Idaho, and competed in the Miss USA pageant. She has appeared on the cover of Jet magazine, and has been profiled in Ebony, Life, and Time magazine, among other publications. CAAM is located at 600 State Drive, Exposition Park, Los Angeles, CA 90037. For more information visit www.caamuseum.org or call (213) 744-7432.
