Event Description

Milwaukee-based artist and writer Nicolas Lampert – author of the new book  A People’s Art History of the United States: 250 Years of Activist Art and Artists Working in Social Justice Movements  – will present a talk that connects the art of the 18th and 19th Century abolitionist movement to the prison justice abolitionist movement today.  Specifically, he will also discuss Tamms Year Ten mud stencil action in Chicago that he helped co-coordinate with TY10 (Tamms Year Ten coalition), Lauri Jo Reynolds, and Jesse Graves. Tamms Year Ten  is a coalition of prisoners, ex-prisoners, families, artists and other concerned citizens who came together to protest the misguided and inhumane policies at Tamms C-MAX, and to call for an end to psychological torture of the Supermax prison through a program of cultural, educational and political events.

Copies of the book will be available for sale by the author following the conversation.

Nicholas Lampert is full-time academic staff with the Peck School of the Arts in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He teaches Printmaking, and Writing and Critical Thinking.
