Prevention Institute Plants Its Roots in Leimert Park

Prevention Institute is pleased to announce that we have now firmly planted our roots in Leimert Park. We recently purchased the building where we’ve been renting space for the last two years at 4315 Leimert Boulevard.

Prevention Institute is a national nonprofit that partners with communities to prevent illness and injury, and promote inclusive development. We have a staff of 40 and offices in Oakland, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. Together, we promote the understanding that community factors—from neighborhood safety and the condition of buildings to access to education, jobs, good food, and green space—determine whether we can be healthy. We advance strategies, training, and research on how to transform communities to support health, wellbeing, safety, and equity.

Our managing director, Manal J. Aboelata, said, “As someone who’ s lived and worked in South Los Angeles for nearly 20 years, I’m thrilled that we’re able to make this significant investment in a neighborhood that is so important to the history and to the future of L.A.”

To find out more about Prevention Institute, check out our website, www.preventioninstitute.org. One of our recent reports is Healthy Development Without Displacement: Realizing the Vision of Healthy Communities for All, which is about how public health and planning organizations can work together to proactively avoid displacing long-time residents and local businesses. Also check out this short video about how land use decisions can help prevent community violence: Coming Together: Land Use and Violence Prevention.

“Prevention Institute has been a welcome addition to Leimert Park’s already impressive tapestry of community activism, artistic expression, and social exchange,” said Chairman of the Board of Supervisors Mark Ridley-Thomas, who represents the Second District, where Leimert Park is located.  He added, “Prevention Institute has served an important role in advocating for priorities in my district such as violence prevention, responsible land use, and health equity and we expect to see even more from them in the future.”
