Hi Y'all,

I know this is a general question, but what is living in Leimert really like? How is the crime rate? Are the neighbors friendly with each other? Is the rent high, low or in between?
I am asking because I am planning to relocate early next year. Right now I live in Hawthorne. It's not the best neighborhood but I haven't had any serious incidents for the two years I've lived here. I enjoy visiting Leimert on Sundays so it just occurred to me to find out more about living there.
Thanks for any help you can give.

I don't live in Liermert area now... but I have lived in that area for years. When I lived there? not long ago... I found it to be nice place to live. Like any area in Los Angeles, you have to be careful of course. But overall the people are friendly and there's always something going on in or around the Liermert Park. I personally like the Jazz clubs and Lucy's as a real mecca for meeting and being around interesting people. When I return to Los Angeles... I'd love to find a neat little apt in the area... cause it's nothing like home!
Thanks Ernie for your input. There are a lot of diverse people who hang out at Leimert. That's a reason I like the area so much.
Living in Leimert Park - there's music going on all the time. There is a love of life here. From my house I can hear the drums beating a couple of times a week. There are celebrations, festivals and political rallies going on all the time.

Are the people nice here? They are the nicest. I was immediately recruited to be in my block club and there's nothing like having pot lucks with your neighbors twice a year. Everybody says hello, and they expect a hello back.

There are some things that could be better: The Village should be open and thriving at night. Crime is lower than in decades, but still too high. Marlton Square/Santa Barbara Plaza is an outrage.

But the good far outweighs the bad.
Thank you enhager. :) I'm sure you'd make a cool neighbor. Next time I'm down that way I will do some scouting around. Do you live in a house or apartment, if I may ask? (If I am being too nosy, please feel free to say so. :) )
I live in a house, but the neighborhoods here do a nice job of combining the two.
This neighborhood like all neighborhoods has its negatives and positives. But my experience has been only positive as I have finally found a community in Los Angeles that I as an African American woman from the east coast can connect to. The rent is standard for Los Angeles and you'll have to make an effort to connect with your neighbors as you would in any neighborhood. The good thing about Leimert is it's core Leimert Village area. We have Drum circles every Sunday, hustling and bustling independently black owned businesses, and community events on the daily basis which will allow you to find where you fit it in in Leimert Park. Goodluck to you and come down to the Drum Circle! Every Sunday @ 3:00PM. If you are on facebook we have a fan page called Leimert Park with a photo of the street sign. Please become a fan and keep updated with the goings on in our village.

It takes a village!

Feel free to contact me at any time.
