I've had the honor of presenting concerts at The World Stage, with Gary Bartz, Terry Callier, and others. I was among
the few people in attendance when Billy and Kamau played their only Duet Concert. That was one of the greatest musical experiences of my life!
So many wonderful concerts have been happening, and are scheduled for the future, at THE (NEW) WORLD STAGE!
They recently moved across the street to 4321 Degnan Boulevard, and have had Phil Ranelin, Jesse Sharps, Munyungo Jackson, Charles Owens and other luminaries. Coming soon Bobby Bradford, Azar Lawrence and Bennie Maupin are all presenting their groups at The World Stage!" - Carlos Niño

Friday September 2 at 9pm: The World Stage Art, Education & Performance Gallery Presents Bobby Bradford. Lee Bradford's life begins in Mississippi, he and his family then moved to Dallas, Texas, in 1946. He moved to Los Angeles, California in 1953 where he reunited with Ornette Coleman, whom he had previously known in Texas. Bradford subsequently joined Coleman's ensemble, but was drafted into the U.S. Air Force and replaced by Don Cherry.
After playing in military bands from late 1954 to late 1958,he rejoined Coleman's quartet from 1961 to 1963, which infrequently performed in public, but was indeed recorded under Coleman's Atlantic contract. Quite unfortunately, these tapes were among those many destroyed in the Great Atlantic Vault Fire. Freddie Hubbard acted as Bradford's replacement upon his departure to return to the West Coast and pursue further studies. Bradford soon began a long-running and relatively well-documented association with the clarinetist John Carter, a pairing that brought both increased exposure at international festivals (though the records remain scantily available, when one excludes web rips and bootlegs). Following Carter's death in 1991, Bradford fronted his own ensemble known as The Mo'tet, with which he has continued to perform since. He is the father of drummer Dennis Bradford. He is also the father of jazz vocalist Carmen Bradford - Bradley Martin
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 3: The World Stage Art, Education & Performance GalleryPerformance Gallery Presents AZAR LAWRENCE.
Like his contemporaries Herbie Hancock and Charles Lloyd, Lawrence later forayed into pop music. He worked with Earth, Wind & Fire, Frank Zappa and Busta Rhymes and during the eighties, collaborated with Maurice White, writing and performing for Earth Wind Fire on their highly acclaimed release, Powerlight. His credits are numerous from this tme, including the Grammy award winning Marvin Gaye album, Hear My Dear.
From an early age, Azar Lawrence has been a powerful musical force, releasing several albums of his own before the age of twenty-five: Bridge Into the New Age, People Moving People,Summer Solstice, Shadow Dancing and People Moving. In recent years, Lawrence has released Legacy and Music of John Coltrane, Speak The Word, Prayer For My Ancestors, Mystic Journey (2010), which received several Best of 2010s and, most recently, The Seeker (Sunnyside Records,2014), his co-production with Seth Abramson, Grammy winner and Artistic Director for the Jazz Standard, recorded live at the Jazz Standard in New York. This burning “live” CD made it on to the 2014 ballot for Grammy nomination consideration. Azar can also be heard as a sideman on The Cookers: Cast The First Stone (2011), and The Headhunters’ Platinum (2011).
Since the early 2000’s, this consummate artist has returned full force to his post-Bop Jazz roots. Lawrence’s distinctive sound embodies a deep spirituality which can be heard on Tyner’s “Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit”, and on his own numerous recordings on Prestige and other top jazz labels. - Bradley Martin
