Enhager I know you this isn't your thing. I hope you don't view this as me trying to shoot the messenger because its not. I should have told you to duck...lol...duck again...

I don't like the term discovery. I don't like when black neighborhoods are called urban. I take issues with that. We are not here to be discovered we have been here and we're not urban just because we're black. I know what urban means, you know what urban means and unless they are calling Silver Lake and Los Feliz urban I got some issues with it. There is nothing wrong with the ghetto, but Leimert Park isn't the ghetto. It's a bohemian art based black neighborhood and I resent people who look like me being given a blanket description by people who aren't black or are black whatever, don't generalize me and I won't make a general blanket statement about your intent. The sponsor section gives us a clue of who is doing this ride. The Greensters and the LABCO. Now the Greensters did a movie about sustainability and I think that is fabulous, but I remember who they asked for in regards to appearance for people to act in the movie and it was race specific. I remember that because it was kind of shocking for me not being in a Hollywood type thing. I would have just thought and alt movie would go beyond that kind of race based casting, but that's ok. I also noticed none of the descriptions had anyone who looked like me. I can't play blonde. Which is completely ok people can do what they need to do with their money and their vision, but I would have liked the option to participate. I acted in quite a few Xmas pagents. What I"m saying is maybe someone who didn't fit the description of the actors wanted to be in the movie why should your genetic make up limit you in an alt film about sustainabilty?

Also I could be wrong but I think these are the same group of people that like to say cyclists are oppressed. (If I'm wrong I apologize, but since they will never come to this site well, maybe they should be diverse in their chose of blogs that they visit, I am.) I don't like when people imply that being a bike riders is like being black or latino or a lesbian because it is not and it is insulting to imply such a thing. And again no problem if you want to do that in your section of the world, but you come to a person of color neighborhood call it urban, call it discovery, you never talk about race ever, but now you want to ride your bicycle around the neighborhood and then call yourself an oppressed person because you ride a bike. Sorry I'm going to say something.

If the cycling community was supportive of other social justice communities I wouldn't say anything, but its not, so you can't get frosting with your cake and some ice cream and a cupcake, no you have to choose. Want to talk about oppression talk about everyone's oppression. Dialogue about race and gender as well as cycling. You want to have an event in Leimert Park then let people who live in that neighborhood have an opportunity to be in your little movie, if you don't have the resouces fine, then at least have the courtesy to not be insulting with your poster and to try to connect up with some riders from the area. It's called being respectful.

Both of those sites that are listed have nothing in regards to diversity on it, so its obvious they are coming down here to look and point and go "oohh black people are neat," so f*ck that.

On the plug talking about planning the ride they even link LA Curbed the most RACIST blog online. All LA Curbed does it make fun of African-Americans and Latinos. Some of the commentor of that site even called the new proposed Crenshaw line be called the "black" line. You don't link to LA Curbed if you have any affinity for people of color because its a super racist site. If you're not a poc maybe you won't notice, but just go through that site.

I will apologize about my blanket statement if you find one instance that LABCO or the Greensters called Silver Lake or H

Hey Browne,

I don't know where the organizers are from, and am not associated in any way that I know of, but I hear what they're saying: "It is a ride brings people together and gives them an opportunity to discover the community, the streets, their history, their culture and each other."

If you're from LA, any part of LA, or even if you moved here like I did, I think Leimert Park should be part of your education, one that you learn more about as you learn more about your city.

I've gone on bike rides that featured several neighborhoods, such as Little Armenia and Little Tokyo, and I've spent afternoons and nights in other areas, Chinatown, Little Ethiopia, Historic Filipinotown, Olvera Street, that are proud to offer the beauty of diversity, the unity of community as well as a taste of Los Angeles. I patronize those communities more because people took me there or told me to go there.

I agree it would have been better for them to contact and partner with a local group, but most people just don't think that far ahead. There's still time to reach out on both sides.

And I do appreciate the nuances of descriptions that reinforce stereotype. I'm not sure how I feel about the word discovery. But I've used it in a post as a headline, then I thought about it and made the Christopher Columbus connection and started using Found. No mal intent intended, but now that I live in Leimert ...

Still I'm surprised you can make a blanket - and damning - assertion like that without backing it up.

All I can say is that I welcome people from Atlanta to Malibu, U Street to Echo Park, Arlington Heights to University Park, to buy a book at EsoWon Books, drink some coffee at Lucy Florence, shop at Zambezi Bazaar, maintain the beat at open mic at Project Blowed ... and on and on.

I'm not trying to be negative, but I know the people doing this ride aren't from and I'm thinking do not currently live in South LA and in general I have a bit of an issue with people coming through neighborhoods of color looking at our stuff like this is some kind tourist area and our stuff is for the entertainment of others. I think some black riding groups should have been contacted in regards to this ride. I also don't particular care for the term "discovery" and "urban" what the hell. I mean how is Leimert Park more urban than HP or downtown or Silver Lake. Leimert Park is a black suburb. So what is urban about Leimert Park?

I will trying to be open minded, but I just wanted to get that off my chest in addition there is also a very popular black oriented ride that goes on the last Sunday of every month and has been going on the last Sunday of every month for some time, which is going to probably cut down on the riders of color that might come to this ride. This reminds me of the freak tours of the 60s.

Great question that was left out. I'm not part of the event, I just thought it sound like fun so I shared. And what great poster! Leimert Park is right there in the middle of a heart. I've sent some email to find out how long the bike ride is but if someone knows don't keep us in suspense.
