FILMS AT CAAM – BEHIND THE VEIL FEATURES FILMS HIGHLIGHTING A POLITICAL SCANDAL, NATIONAL CRISIS AND DREAMING WHILE BLACK

One of the California African American Museum’s (CAAM) signature programs is Films at CAAM, which screens mostly first run, thematically linked, award-winning and critically-acclaimed documentary films during the months of April, June, August, and November.  November's Films at CAAM presents its series Lifting the Veil, showcasing several films throughout the month that reveals the truth and aftermath of a political sandal, a national crisis beyond one company and reaching for the American dream while black.

VANISHING PEARLS (2014, 80 min)
Following the 2011 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, director Nailah Jefferson’s Vanishing Pearls chronicles the untold story of personal and professional devastation in Pointe à la Hache, a close-knit fishing village on the Gulf Coast.

ANITA HILL: SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER (2013, 95 min)
Against a backdrop of sex, politics and race, Anita reveals the intimate story of a woman who spoke truth to power. Directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Freida Lee Mock, the film is both a celebration of Anita Hill’s legacy and a rare glimpse into her private life with friends and family, many of whom were by her side that fateful day 23 years ago.

Wednesday, November 19, 2014, 7 p.m.

AMERICAN PROMISE (2013, 135 min)
This film chronicles 13 years as directors, Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson, who are middle-class African-American parents in Brooklyn, New York, turn their cameras on their son, Idris and his best friend Seun,   Both African American males, are filmed as they make their way through Dalton, a mostly white and prestigious private school. Idris will be present at CAAM for a ‘talkback’ and Q &A afterwards.

ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM

CAAM is a state agency charged with researching, collecting, preserving and interpreting for public enrichment the history, art and culture of African Americans. Collaboratively operating in partnership with its 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization Friends, the Foundation of the California African American Museum, CAAM houses a permanent collection of over 4,500 objects of art, artifacts and historical documents, and a publicly accessible Research Library containing more than 20,000 volumes.
