What is Leimert Park ? - Dwight Trible

Without blowing his own trumpet, the Californian veteran has established himself as a visionary jazz vocalist. He has moulded this reputation over 40 years at the sides of the likes of Pharaoh Sanders, Harry Belafonte and Charles Lloyd. The quiet African American has also been involved in local community music circles, as the vocal director of the Los Angeles Pan Afrikan People’s Arkestra. In 2003 a friendship with KPFK radio presenter Carlos Niño gave birth to a project which culminated in the audacious 2005 release “Love is the Answer”.

While working the door at Fifth Street Dick's, one of my responsibilities was to change the CDs when Ruby (MY DEAR) or Richard were busy. My #1 CD was "Art Blakey 3 Blind Mice". I knew I played it to often when Richard would give me the eye. The eye that conveyed, "get back on the door, who just went upstairs?" I always had a pat answer, just mention one of "the village" jazz artist. Oh, I was good at dropping names: Horace, Dwight, Nate, Steve,and many more. Then his other eye would question my candor. Come pay day I would receive a smile, worth more now than the gold.

This is a beautiful short on Leirmert Park is in Los Angeles. Actually a whole documentary movie could be made on this cultural oais in the middle of Los Angeles. I love Leirmert from the days when I was a little kid and would come to the old Leirmert Theater... (that was way back) ... to today with cultural events happening all the time. Long live Leimert Park! ...
