Enjoy Live Performances, Art Workshops and More
The California African American Museum (CAAM) presents its Target Sundays program, A Caribbean Musical Potpourri—collectively showcasing the island favorites of Reggae, Calypso, Soca and Latin American sounds. This event will take place on Sunday, September 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be co-hosted by the multitalented singer and actress Dawnn Lewis as well as actor Jeffrey Anderson-Gunter.
Fall is quickly approaching but Target Sundays at CAAM is not letting you go without giving you one last spicy treat to end the summer heat. This Caribbean Musical Potpourri will include performances by Wilson Sandoval of Innocent Mind. Wilson is described as an uplifting hip-hop artist who uses his platform to build unity and consciousness through his music. Speaking in both English and Spanish, Wilson ‘s ultimate goal is to keep the foundation of hip-hop alive. Introducing a new flare on Spanish music and dancing is the unique group Wonder Women. This Latin American group is made up of artists Michelle Jubilee Gonzalez on violin and vocals, Erick Bolîvar on guitar and vocals, Circe Díaz on the cello, and Julito Sainz on percussion all exhibiting a unique mixture of music, dance, and spoken word. Their sound and exuberance is unsurpassed in the Latin American culture here in Los Angeles. Another great performer for the evening is Estaire Godinez, who comes from a family of musicians. Since her return to the U.S. her strong musical background has granted her the opportunity to perform and tour with big stars such as Prince, George Benson, and The Brothers Johnson. She has released two albums of her own both including a jazz feel with fresh arrangements.
Amid the live performances, Kathleen Bradlee will be signing copies of her newly released book “Backstage at The Price is Right: Memoirs of a Barker Beauty.” As the first African American model for The Price is Right, Bradlee gives a glimpse into her personal life, the behind the scenes of CBS’ television game show “The Price Is Right,” her role as Mrs. Parker in the hit comedy “Friday” and more.
Educator and artist Teresa Tolliver will host an art workshop open to all ages, starting at noon. Special guest DJ N’namdi will be adding his special touches throughout the program as well. Art materials will be supplied by CAAM. Events at CAAM are free and open to the public. Parking is $10 in the lot adjacent to CAAM, at 39th and Figueroa Streets. CAAM is located at 600 State Drive, Exposition Park, 90037. For more information on CAAM visit www.caamuseum.org.
