An Evening in Africa — 44th Annual Kwanzaa Karamu Feast

The Organization Us will have “An Evening in Africa — 44th Annual Kwanzaa Karamu Feast” with African foods, dance, drumming and poetry. Dr. Karenga will also be present to
give a speech.
The annual Kwanzaa parade will take place along Crenshaw Boulevard Sunday to mark the start of the seven-day African American festival.
The theme of the 34th annual Kwanzaa Gwaride Parade and Festival will be Improving Ourselves Naturally, emphasizing lowering obesity, reducing hypertension and stopping diabetes, according to Tammy Lee of People of Color, the parade’s
organizers.
Eve Allen, a doctor of alternative healing practices, will be the Iyaba (queen) of the parade and the herbalist and record producer Doctah B Sirius will be the oba (king).
The parade is set to begin at noon at the corner of Crenshaw and Adams boulevards, then head south along Crenshaw to Leimert Park, where it will conclude. A festival will be held at the park from 2 to 6 p.m.,
including musical and spoken word entertainment.

Activities at the free event will begin with a hands-on workshop for children at 5 p.m. The Family Kwanzaa Celebration at 6:30
p.m. will highlight the principles for the seven days of Kwanzaa. For

Also today, the Afrikan Cultural Research and Study Group will host a Kwanzaa Celebration, "A Time to Share," from 1 to 3 p.m. at the
Long Beach Senior Center Auditorium, 1150 E. Fourth St.
Activities will include a marketplace, drummers and dancers, silent auction, storytelling for children, poetry reading and door
prizes. Dinner will be served.
