The California African American Museum (CAAM) invites the community, tourists, dancers, skaters and those seeking a good time to join in the celebration of community diversity during Target Sundays at CAAM: Summer Sizzle with Salsa and Soul. Taking place Sunday, August 5, 2012, from 1– 4 p.m., at 600 State Drive, Exposition Park, the event will be co-hosted by Showtime at the Apollo’s legendary host, Kiki Shepard.
Be sure to bring your dancing shoes as the celebration will include dancing in CAAM’s courtyard to live performances by salsa and soul musicians who will accompany vocalist Ileana Garcia; The R & B Allstars, led by saxophonist Adrian Crutchfield; “American Idol” contestant, Karen Yvonne; and 80’s songwriter and singer, Toni Malone.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn how salsa during a short lesson before Ileana performs. Other activities will include the opportunity to view exhibitions in CAAM’s galleries, the monthly sustainable art workshop with educator and artist, Teresa Tolliver, and much more. The art workshop begins at noon and is open to all ages. Art materials will be supplied by CAAM. Vendors will be onsite throughout the day selling food, art and locally-designed clothing.
“This year we have made certain to include a program devoted to dancing in CAAM’s
courtyard as previously we hosted a similar themed Target Sundays program and the audience
spent most of their time out of their seats dancing and swinging to salsa music,” said Charmaine Jefferson, Executive Director of CAAM.
