The
North Area Neighborhood Development Council turns the Hoover Recreation Center parking lot into a skate park and green oasis this Saturday, October 23, from noon to 5pm.
The
belated ParkingDayLA event, on the corner of Hoover and 25th Street,
will celebrate the same spirit of creating community by leaving the
cars behind. It's a reminder to us and our elected officials that the
needs of the car should not be the top priority.
I am proud to
say I was appointed to the neighborhood council as the USC staff
designee in July and am just beginning to get the hang of it. But I
know the issues we discuss on UniversityParkFamily.com inform my every
vote when I am behind the cafeteria table as a member of the
Neighborhood Council.
I will be at the Hoover parking lot giving
out free shade trees, a free vegetable stand, as the kids enjoy a
pop-up skate park and an opportunity to design a perfect parks. Many of
the other members of the neighborhood council will be manning the table
as well, so you can talk to any of us about what's going on.
Neighborhood Council
President Shawn Simons, a member
of UniversityParkFamily.com, requires all of us volunteer council
members to join one committee and meet once a month. We also have to
have a year-long project. That's in addition to the three-hour meetings
on the First Thursday of the month at the MLK Park on 39th and Western.
So this plan will help ensure this neighborhood council will have
tangible outcomes.
The Park Day is the first of many I hope.
