Remembering Mama: NPR tribute to the mother of the blues

"Everybody has played at Babe's and Ricky's."



Big Mama Thornton sang her original "Hound Dog" at the club when it was on Central Avenue. Bobby "Blue" Bland, John Lee Hooker, Deacon Jones, Ike Turner, Eric Clapton, T-Bone Walker and Albert Collins.



Thanks to Laura Mae Gross, the Blues live today in Leimert Park.

Susaye Greene - The Last Supreme



Susaye Greene was born in Houston, Texas and attended and graduated from the New York City High School of Performing Arts (Made famous in the musical Fame)



Greene sang with Ray Charles' Raelettes and was the only Raelette to sing at Ray's funeral.

A few years ago I saw a profound little movie called "pay it forward" which was about a little boy who ran into a person who did a good deed for him and he was obligated to do a good deed for another person even if it was a perfect stranger? What Were Some of Your Memories of the 70's Music?

What were your memories of the 70's?



I was born in 1966.



In the early 70's I attended the American School of Brasilia, Brazil and was exposed to Led Zeppelin, AC DC, Kiss, etc... , however, I had an uncle who listened to Jazz and I will never forget when I first heard Billie Holidays' voice. It enveloped me and I was smitten.

Black Dynamite, starring Michael Jai White, is a spoof of blaxploitation films of the 1970s. Its premiere was at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, where Sony Worldwide Acquisitions picked it up for distribution. Water main breaks come to Leimert

On Sunday morning at 12:45 a.m. on 5th Avenue just south of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard water spilled onto the street, causing minor damage. About 50 customers lost water supply until workers restored service about 9 a.m., according to the L.A. Times' Jack Leonard.
