Profile Information

So what brings you to Leimert Park Beat? Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I was led to this park because I love to practice my work in art in peaceful park settings.

I was born and raised in Seattle, Washington where the experience of life in America's ghetto became an adventure for me. This statement may be needed to express my life in especially art to date.

The love for art today was found in the first prison cell experienced at age twenty-one. It is believed that our Higher Power offered me the gift of art in this cell through the fear of being that new "duck" in prison that was flagged by old timers having done decades of time. Such fear found me sketching a portrait of a musical figure loved so much out of a jet magazine. It was recognized how the many five by eight inch sketches of Chaka Kahn using the half pencils without erasers were so detailed with highlight and depth and very close likeness. I went on from there to gain a strange sense of strength and courage where I achieved my GED and two associate degrees over the course of my young adult life doing time over the 1970s and 80s. Two prison terms were served due to my getting out both times and pursuing old people, places and things and its ultimate results.

More continued for a couple years including a short but final third term in California's prison system and finding out that I could not endure my art while deep into a drug and alcohol addiction. 1992 is when the search for and acceptance of a life free of "yesterday" came into my life. The experience of my life to date will hopefully someday become a paperback for those interested in enduring another story of the work it takes to real victory - especially those looking for their own answer or way to finally give up the old for anew.

In prison is where I believe our Higher Power had begun work on me as I furthered not only my education but my love for putting the many legends in music on canvas. I achieved a third associates, after getting off parole from the prison system in 1997, five years after surrendering "yesterday" and going for the hard work it would take to make a new life for the first time.

Life today has not been an easy one but with help from experiences such as homelessness through clean and sober eyes as well as finding help entities exampled by Augusta F. Hawkins and the great compassionate and empathic psychological staff there I have found myself winning a battle to victory still yet in my 59 years of life on this earth.

I am currently pursuing not only certification to counsel in the field of substance abuse but have been accepted in a well-known outpatient recovery center to facilitate help groups. I have also been trained as a peer advocate in the area of mental health. My main theme in art continues to be the expression on canvas of the infinite world of music I believe was a therapy tool for me then and now. Atlanta, Georgia and here in Los Angeles are the only two cities I focused on in art after my life free of drugs and alcohol including nicotine covering the last ten years of such travel. I plan to make Los Angeles my home and finish out whatever it is I am to become after, again, "yesterday".

Good times at:
Best event at Liemert Village was the book signing June 30th, 2012 where I gave Zeola Gaye the canvas I had done of her brother Marvin.
Last song I heard or I sang:
I keep Marvin's What's Gonin' On album in memory almost daily today due to how true a message he expressed back in my era.
Profession:
groups facilitaor at Exouse outpatient clinic. Still working to become certified in California to counsel in the substance abuse and mental health areas suffered by especially my black culture.
My Leimert Park Secret:
Really don't have a secret in my storage about Leimert park. I do want to try and achieve a place/apartment in this area so that I may have even ore access to this atmosphere on those wonderful early morning dawns that find a completed canvas by the time the dust sets in.
Hometown:
Seattle, Washinton
Block Club:
I don't have a block kind of club but I have been a member of Narcotics Anonymous for over twenty years.
