LEIMERT PARK: THE SOUL OF LOS ANGELES

enhager

Black Panther photographer, Muhammad Ali's daughter, a hip hop doc, vegan soul food author and creator of the Kwanzaa postage stamp: All on menu at Saturday's Leimert Park Village Book Fair

The Leimert Park Village Book Fair features more than 150 authors, writers, storytellers and poets, in addition to workshops, forums, and panel discussions.

A poets stage, Farmers Market, cooking demonstration, outdoor theatrical performances from the Pasadena Playhouse Theatre Players and the Towne Street Theatre, along with musical entertainment will round out the book fair.

Maryum “May May” Ali will read from the book she wrote about her father: “I Shook Up the World.” And California Poet Laureate Al Young will be there.

Workshop topics: “How to Get Published;” “How to Write a Childrens Book;” and, “How to Market Your Book” and a Family History research class.

This is also a family event with face painting, clowns, storytellers, a crafts pavilion and a special performance by Mayseo the Magician. Scribble Press from the Westside Pavilion will offer an opportunity for youth to write, create, and publish their own books on the spot.

For specific times visit Leimert Park Village Book Fair.

From their site: Renowned photographer/author Howard Bingham learned photography "on the job" working as a photographer at The Sentinel, a small black newspaper in Los Angeles.

Aside from being the personal photo-biographer of Muhammad Ali, Mr. Bingham was a contract photographer for Life and Sports Illustrated, with photo essays appearing in Look, Newsweek, Playboy and Ebony.

Mr. Bingham, who refers to himself as the "Forrest Gump" of photojournalism because he just keeps "popping up as history is being made," has used his camera to document 30 years of America's growing pains.
